In a bid to raise awareness about breast cancer in Macedonia, 13 prominent female journalists have posed without their clothes for the photo campaign led by a daily newspaper.

The nude photographs of female journalists are intended to raise series issues rather than being provocative, said Marina Kostova, an editor at?Vest, the daily newspaper that marked its 13th birthday by launching the breast cancer campaign.

The photo session is aimed at demystifying the illness and raising awareness not only among women in Macedonia, but also within the country?s institutions.

?We have lost loved ones to this disease,? Kostova said.

?Only timely and accurate information about breast cancer, uterus cancer and ovarian cancer and early detection can erase the fear and save lives,? she said.

The newspaper has also pledged to pinpoint the shortcomings in the medical system that Macedonian women face.

?We have written about many personal stories that demystify real life with this disease in Macedonia ? from the lack of equipment for mammography and ultrasound scans, lack of tests, medicine and the lack of gynaecologists,? Kostova said.

Official data shows that some 700 new cases of breast cancer are being discovered in Macedonia each year and that the annual mortality rate is 25 women per 100,000 citizens, making breast cancer one of the biggest killers in the country.

According to the official data, the youngest woman in Macedonia to undergo breast cancer surgery was just 19 years old.
