Bergenfield Firefighter Stole $2,020 From Union, Cops Say
United States?(New Jersey) - A borough firefighter has been charged with third- degree theft, after allegedly taking $2,020 from the fireman's union checking account. Edgardo Gomez, 41, of Dumont, was arrested May 14 and admitted to making ATM withdrawals from the Fireman's Benevolent Association account between Feb. 24 and March 13, according to Police Capt. Michael Carr.

Gomez was released with a summons, Carr said, but the case has been referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. "They will review the case at their level, and they may tell us to add a misconduct charge," Carr said.

Borough Administrator Frederick McGarril confirmed Thursday that Gomez had been suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the case. McGarril would not comment further, saying it was a personnel matter.

Gomez was the treasurer of the association, which has roughly six members. Carr said no motive had been determined.
