Cunard Line is considered by many to be the most recognized brand name in the international ocean cruise industry. Based in the United Kingdom, the company has had a long association with the British Royal family. This is perhaps most evident in the name of the three ships operated by the company. Those ships are named Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.
In 1998, the company was acquired by the Carnival Corporation and operates as a subsidiary of that parent company. Carnival is a dual-listed public company . Its shares are traded on both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE). The Carnival Corporation can claim to be the oldest longest operating cruise ship company in the world. It can trace its history back to the Pacific and Oriental Steamship Company, more commonly known as the P&O Line, which introduced the first passenger ships into service during 1844.
The subsidiary operates three vessels named after three British monarchs. They vessel names are the Queen Victoria (QV), Queen Elizabeth (QE) and Queen Mary 2 (QM2). All three vessels offer luxury cruising. They have interesting itineraries, opulent onboard staterooms and facilities, impeccably skilled crew and highly trained staff all aimed to allow passengers an effortless cruise experience where they can totally unwind, refresh and recharge.
The QE is the new addition to the fleet. It joined her sister ships during October 2010. The QV entered service during December 2007. The QM2 entered service in 2004 with a maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 2004. As the largest vessel in the fleet, the QM2 serves as the company flagship. Many consider her the most luxurious and technically advanced cruise ship ever built.
The company operates an award-winning website. Passengers are able to research their trip well in advance of booking their journey. A quick inspection of that site will confirm that the company offers an unbelievably wide range of choice for both world cruises and shorter cruise tours. Cunard vessels sail to all corners of the globe. The company prides itself on offering the widest selection of itineraries in the industry.
Queen Mary 2 defines an unparalleled level of cruising grandeur. She has 14 spacious decks for passengers to wander and indulge their pleasures and pursuits. She is the only cruise liner to offer seven-day trans-Atlantic cruise journeys between Southampton and New York.
As flag ship for the Cunard line, the Queen Mary 2 naturally attracts a large amount of attention. This is not unwarranted given her standard of luxury and size. She has a gross registered tonnage of 151,400 tonnes with a length of 1,132 feet, beam of 131 feet and draft of 32 feet. The vessel has the capacity to carry 2,620 passengers with a crew contingent of 1,253. She is capable of maintaining a speed of 28 knots. She is registered in Hamilton, Bermuda.
In summary, cruise liners evolved enormously throughout the twentieth century both in terms of size and technical sophistication. For instance, the Queen Mary 2 is about five times longer than the first ever Cunard cruise liner, the Britannia. The company vessels have raised their level of opulence with exotic marbles, rich woods, plush carpets, rich fabrics and soft furnishings forming part of the onboard decor. No one does ocean cruising better than Cunard.
