Police checking robbery find 5 dead in home

Authorities investigating a robbery at a house in Birmingham found five people dead in the home on Sunday.

Sgt. Johnny Williams says officers arrived at the house around 3:30 a.m. Sunday after getting a call that a robbery was in progress.

The officers soon discovered the five victims inside.

The victims were not identified.

Police have launched a homicide investigation, but there have been no arrests or charges filed in the case.

Brenda Houston, who lives across the street from the west Birmingham house where the bodies were found, said the house had been rented for about a year and a half by a woman in her late 40s and her son and brothers.

"They would speak to us, and that's all we knew," she said. "We didn't know their names but they were always friendly."

Houston, 64, said her street was a quiet one filled with older residents who were friendly with each other. She said there was a constant stream of visitors coming in and out of the home, but that the residents never seemed to cause any disturbances.

"Most people are in a state of shock. They never had any trouble over there," Houston said. "I never seen the police over there. This was really strange that this happened. It wasn't like they were real rowdy."

For Sale: Detailed Voter Profiles

For decades, the most prized asset a state Democratic Party owned was its voter file. In its simplest form, a voter file is a roster of registered voters assembled from the rolls of local election authorities. But state parties were able to add reams of individual-level information gleaned from years of interacting with voters: their phone numbers, volunteer histories, and pet issues. In some states, the voter file provided enough texture to offer an ethnographic lens on local activist culture. The New Hampshire file, for instance, flagged individuals who had displayed lawn signs or brought food to a campaign headquarters to feed volunteers. This was information that campaigns could not get elsewhere, and party bosses put a price on it, either selling their voter file to candidates or saving it as a prize that could be extended only to those they endorsed?often a crucial way of protecting incumbents or playing favorites in primaries.

HP Envy 15 review (early 2012)

If there's one thing we took away from our jaunt at CES, it's this: consumers' appetites for mainstream laptops haven't waned all that much. Even in the Ultrabook category, Intel expects half of the models to go on sale this year will have 14- and 15-inch screens -- as strong an indicator as any that lots of folks aren't yet ready to give up their slightly larger screens, their discrete graphics, their (gasp!) optical drives. While HP recently announced its first Ultrabook for the consumer market, the Envy 14 Spectre, it's fully fleshed out its premium Envy series to include two additional models for people who crave more oomph.

The Envy 15 is the medium-sized member of the crew, with a 15.6-inch screen and the same overhauled design you'll find across the Envy lineup. Delightfully, too, it marks the return of HP's eye-popping Radiance display, and also comes with a generous two-year warranty and full copies of Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements. And with a starting price of $1,100, it sharply undercuts the 15-inch MacBook Pro, while taking direct aim at other high-end 15-inchers, like the Dell XPS 15z and Samsung Series 7 Chronos. So how does it stack up? Meet us after the break to find out.

These mobile apps should be music to your ears (Appolicious)

There are hundreds if not thousands of high-quality music applications available to download on smartphones and tablet devices. From apps that stream Internet radio stations, to music detection and discovery tools, to concert video services, there is no shortage of apps that rock (and appeal to other genres). Also note that while some apps aren?t built specifically for iPads and Android tablets, they run perfectly well on the larger screens and if anything have better audio capabilities.

So join the chorus of music appreciation and download any or all of these music apps right away.

While there are myriad ways to listen to music from our favorite bands and musicians, it is not so easy to discover newer recording artists. Enter Band of the Day, which showcases songs, videos, discographies and histories of ? you guessed it ? one new band each day. The expertly designed and curated application has a visual design catered to the iPhone and iPod Touch, and a separate iPad version is apparently in the works. Developer 955 Dreams previously created beautifully designed apps On the Way to Woodstock, available as separate versions for the iPhone and iPad, and iPad app, The History of Jazz.

Raditaz (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android: free)

While services like Pandora and Slacker set the standard for Internet radio that are also available as free applications for iOS and Android devices, their commercials can be distracting. I?m not sure how the folks behind Raditaz make money, but their apps and website have a library of more than 13 million songs that are streamed without any promotional interruption. Like most Internet radio services, users can type the name of the band or artist they want to listen to. From there, songs from that artist and related bands and musicians play continuously. Unlike stations that are programmed by algorithms, Raditaz has a decidedly human touch. The app also lets you listen to stations played by those in your vicinity, as well as others that are trending or featured by Raditaz curators.

Hound (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad Android: free)

By now you are probably familiar with audio detection apps like SoundHound and Shazam that will recognize what songs are playing in your vicinity and provide links to download, lyrics and other background information. But what if you have a song in your head that you would like to add to your library while on the go? Developed by the makers of SoundHound, Hound locates tracks simply through voice commands. Similar to the Siri personal voice assistant inside the iPhone 4S, Hound reliably responds when prompted with the title of a song and the band/artist that recorded it. In addition to clips and purchase opportunities, the app beautifully displays entire videos from YouTube. Like SoundHound, Shazam, and SoundTracking (which pioneered how songs are shared with friends), Hound is available on both iOS and Android platforms.

Spotify (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android: free, with $10 monthly subscription)

If you want access to any particular song at any time, your best bet is to sign-up for a music subscription service. Spotify arrived in North America last year with great fanfare and for good reason. With 15 million tracks in its library it is the most elegantly designed independent mobile music subscription available. While users of the web-based application can listen to Spotify for free with commercials, the apps for iOS and Android devices will cost you $10 per month (and spare you promos). Other notable music subscription services available for iOS and Android devices are Rhapsody and Rdio.

Qello (Android: free)

Like concert videos? This app ? currently exclusive to Android phones, tabs and TVs ? offers hundreds of high-definition videos to view with a $5 monthly subscription. The developers are planning to dramatically increase the size of Qello?s library and expand to iOS devices shortly.

Kristin Cavallari Pregnancy: Not Planned!

If you were surprised to hear that Kristin Cavallari is pregnant with Jay Cutler's baby, after they got re-engaged only recently, you certainly weren't alone.

The couple themselves were shocked by the news.

Jay and Kristin announced Sunday they are expecting, following a crazy few months where they got engaged, broke off their engagement, then reconciled.

Sources close to the couple say they'd discussed the possibility of kids, but planned on waiting at least a few years - she's 25, he's 28 - to start a family.

Things happen.

Kristin Cavallari, Jay Cutler

Shocking as it was, sources say they're thrilled with the joyous accident, renewing their commitment more than ever to making their relationship work.

In a sense, their breakup and reconciliation, after a few months spent apart, shows they probably are better equipped to handle such a life change.

Here's hoping, anyway, and congratulations again!

Blazers down Kings 101-89 (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Jamal Crawford scored a season-high 26 points and the Portland Trail Blazers returned home from a six-game road trip with a 101-89 win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

Gerald Wallace had 20 points and eight rebounds and LaMarcus Aldridge added 13 points and 16 rebounds for the Blazers, who were coming off a 2-4 trip. Portland improved to 7-1 at the Rose Garden, playing there for the first time since Jan. 11.

DeMarcus Cousins had 18 points and 13 rebounds, his 12th double-double of the season, for the Kings. Jimmer Fredette scored 13 points and Francisco Garcia added 12. Sacramento dropped to 2-9 on the road.

The Blazers (10-7) beat the Kings 101-79 on Dec. 27 and have taken 11 of the last 12 in the series.

Crawford, averaging 12.3 points per game, has been hot and cold since joining Portland as a free agent in December, but he seems to be finding his range. He scored 24 against Orlando on Jan. 11 and 22 on Wednesday at Atlanta.

The last time the two teams met, the Kings were coached by Paul Westphal. He was fired after seven games and replaced with assistant Keith Smart, who is 4-7 since taking over.

Sacramento was missing second-leading scorer Marcus Thornton with a thigh bruise. The Kings had won two in a row but fell 128-95 to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, despite Fredette's career-high 20 points.

Against the Blazers, Sacramento led early in the game but couldn't sustain it. Returning from missing a game with a hand injury, Wallace had 15 points and eight rebounds in the first half for the Blazers. Portland went on a 20-7 run at the end of the second quarter, briefly opening a 20-point lead and took a 53-38 advantage into the break.

Portland went up 76-56 and the Kings didn't get any closer than 13 down until Isaiah Thomas and Fredette made 3-pointers in the last minute.

Notes: Portland was beginning its first back-to-back-to-back stretch of the season. The Blazers play Memphis Tuesday and Golden State Wednesday. ... Kings G John Salmons played after being hospitalized over the weekend in Memphis with food poisoning. He played 18 minutes and didn't score. ... Blazers C Marcus Camby played just 12 minutes. He sat much of the first half with three fouls and then left the game in the third quarter with a mild groin strain. He had just returned from missing three games with a sprained ankle.

Chinese fire on Tibetan protest, 1 dead: advocacy group (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Chinese troops fired on thousands of Tibetans protesting in southwestern Sichuan province Monday, killing at least one and wounding more, two overseas advocacy groups said.

Free Tibet, a London-based group that campaigns for Tibetan self-determination, said the protesting Tibetans gathered at an intersection in Luhuo, about 590 km (370 miles) west of Sichuan's capital of Chengdu, and marched on government offices, where security forces opened fire about midday.

The Tibetans were protesting about arrests earlier in the day in connection with the distribution of pamphlets carrying the slogan "Tibet Needs Freedom" and declaring that more Tibetans were ready to stage self-immolations to challenge Chinese rule, the group said in an emailed statement.

One resident -- a 49-year-old Tibetan man called Yonten -- was shot dead by government forces and another 30 or so residents were injured, said Free Tibet.

Another advocacy group, the International Campaign for Tibet, said three people were killed and about nine injured when police fired into the crowd in Luhuo, which is called Drango or Draggo by Tibetans.

"Others were injured in the crackdown, including through beatings by police, following the dissemination of leaflets in Drango saying that Tibetans should not celebrate New Year due to the self-immolations and situation in Tibet," Kate Saunders, the London-based communications director for the International Campaign, said in an emailed statement that cited several unnamed sources.

This year the main Tibetan traditional new year celebrations begin on February 22.

"Due to fears for their safety, Tibetans who were injured are unable to seek treatment at the local government-run hospital," said the International Campaign for Tibet.

Chinese security forces have been on edge after 16 incidents of self-immolation by ethnic Tibetans over the last year in response to growing resentment of Beijing's controls on religion. Some have called for the return of the Dalai Lama, their exiled Buddhist leader.

The mountainous western part of Sichuan province where the recent unrest has been concentrated is dominated by ethnic Tibetans and lies next to the official Tibetan Autonomous Region.

The reports could not be immediately verified. A staff member of the county public security bureau said he was not aware of any incident.

"There's nothing happening. I don't know about anything," he said, before hanging up.

The two advocacy groups said Tibetans from nearby areas were continuing to converge on Luhuo Monday.

China's Foreign Ministry has branded the self-immolators "terrorists" and has said the Dalai Lama, whom it condemns as a supporter of violent separatism, should take the blame.

Bonus season not as festive for bank CEOs

(AP) ? JPMorgan Chase, the nation's largest bank, posted a record profit for 2011. That didn't translate into a bigger bonus for CEO Jamie Dimon. Morgan Stanley's latest quarterly results topped expectations as the bank trimmed costs and cleaned up problems dating from the financial crisis. But CEO James Gorman saw the value of his stock awards for the year fall by half.

Across their ranks, Wall Street banks are curbing bonus pay for last year's performance, which was marked by big drops in stock prices and still-hefty costs for mortgage-related problems. In the last three months of the year, fear about the European debt crisis made the stock and bond markets volatile, and clients of all the major banks shied away from mergers and acquisitions and public offerings of stock. That sharply reduced investment banking and underwriting fees. The banks also faced a surge in populist anger, as the Occupy Wall Street movement went national.

Financial stocks were some of the worst performing in 2011. While the S&P 500 Index finished the year flat, Morgan Stanley shares plunged 44 percent, JPMorgan dropped nearly 22 percent and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. tanked 46 percent.

Compensation followed the downward trend. In a closely watched and politically charged gauge, JPMorgan Chase & Co. revealed earlier this month that it set aside 36 percent less than the year before to pay its investment bankers. Morgan Stanley shed 700 workers last year and capped the amount that workers can get in their bonuses immediately, deferring anything over $125,000. Rival Goldman eliminated 7 percent of its employees and cut 2011 pay by 21 percent.

And it appears the banks' CEOs are not immune. On Friday, Morgan Stanley's regulatory filing showed that the value of Gorman's stock award for the year dropped to $5.1 million from $10.2 million in 2010.

Gorman, who became CEO two years ago, has been slimming down the bank, selling off units like a mortgage servicing division and an asset management business. He's been emphasizing divisions like wealth management, which provide smaller returns than some investment banking operations but also carry a lot less risk because they're based on fees rather than markets. Unlike JPMorgan and some other big banks, Morgan Stanley doesn't have a large consumer deposit base to rely on when its investment bank stumbles.

JPMorgan's Dimon received restricted stock worth $12.6 million and stock appreciation rights reportedly valued at roughly $5 million for 2011, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Friday. That compares with about $17.1 million in stock and SARs that he was granted for 2010.

For the full year, JPMorgan posted a record profit of $19 billion, up from $17.4 billion in 2010. But the bank struggled amid the choppy financial markets, which hurt investment banking fees in the fourth quarter. The bank also disclosed that it spent $3.2 billion last year to fight lawsuits, almost all of them over poorly written mortgages. That's down from $5.7 billion in 2010, but Dimon acknowledged there's still a "huge drag" on earnings five years after the bubble burst.

Complete compensation details, including the value of the executives' 2011 cash compensation, perks and benefits weren't disclosed. None of the banks have filed annual proxy statements, which include those financial details.

Dimon received a total pay package for 2010 valued at $20.8 million, including a salary of $1 million and a cash bonus of $5 million. Gorman received compensation valued at $15.2 million, including a salary of $800,000 and a cash bonus of $3.9 million.

The Associated Press formula calculates an executive's total compensation during the last fiscal year by adding salary, bonuses, perks, above-market interest the company pays on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock and stock options awarded during the year. The AP formula does not count changes in the present value of pension benefits. That makes the AP total slightly different in most cases from the total reported by companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The value that a company assigned to an executive's stock and option awards for 2010 was the present value that the company expected the awards to be worth to the executive over time. Companies use one of several formulas to calculate that value. However, the number is just an estimate, and what an executive ultimately receives depends on the performance of the company's stock in the years after the awards are granted. Most stock compensation programs require an executive to wait a specified length of time to receive shares or exercise options.

Journalist gunned down during prayers in Pakistan

Courtesy Voice Of America

Slain journalist Mukarram Atif, reporting for the Voice of America from Pakistan's Mohmand tribal agency.

By Mushtaq Yusufzai and Amna Nawaz, NBC News

PESHAWAR, Pakistan ? According to his family,? Mukarram Khan Aatif, 47, knew the risks he faced, but still decided to continue reporting.

As a journalist in Pakistan's northwest and tribal regions, Aatif worked for the U.S.-government funded Voice of America Pashto-language radio service Deewa, and for a local Pakistani Urdu-language network called Dunya. He covered his own communities in the tribal regions which are ravaged by militancy and terrorism.

Aatif told the stories of those who had been displaced after military operations forced them from their homes. His colleagues say he tried to balance the stories about violence and terror with the underreported, but vital stories about education and health.

"He used to find a news story in everything," said colleague Hameedullah Khan.

But his reporting upset the Taliban, who say Aatif refused to cover them the way they wanted, and dared to criticize their actions - which is why, they say, two gunmen armed with AK-47's entered the mosque where Aatif was praying last week, and shot him dead.?

"He was on our hit list," Taliban spokesman Ihsannullah Ihsan told NBC News. "And now we will target other journalists who have become a party against the Taliban."

Aatif became the 38th Pakistani journalist to be killed since 2002, and the first to be assassinated in 2012.

The Committee to Protect Journalists named Pakistan the deadliest country to report from for the second consecutive year in 2011. Of the 46 journalists killed as a result of their work across the world last year, seven died in Pakistan. In 2010, out of 44 journalists killed worldwide, eight were from Pakistan. Local journalists, typically working in and around their home communities, are often at greater risk.?

Aatif was no exception. He narrowly escaped a twin suicide attack while reporting from the Mohmand tribal region in December 2010. Two other journalists were killed in that attack. His colleagues say he often talked about the horror he witnessed that day, as he watched the blasts from less than 100 yards away.?
?
Three years ago, when the Taliban decided they were unhappy with his reporting and passed along a death threat through the local journalists? association, Aatif chose to move his family from the tribal regions to an area just outside of Peshawar, rather than stop working.

"We left our native village in Mohmand and shifted our family to Shabqadar because of threats from the Taliban militants, but they chased us even here," said Haji Yaqoob Khan, Aatif's older brother. "He was a journalist, and well-known to everybody, but to me, he was still a child. I was always worried for his security, but I couldn't save his life."

Colleagues and family members remember Aatif as an honest, hospitable, and hard-working man. Hundreds attended his funeral prayers in Mohmand last week, and dozens of his colleagues called for justice outside the Peshawar Press Club, as they protested the murder of the man they had all come to know and respect over the years.

Colleague Hameedullah Khan remembers Aatif as a man who was shy with strangers, but was the life of the party among friends; a man who loved to share jokes and laugh.

"He used to buy chocolates from the village shop, just to hand them out to the local children," said his brother.

Voice of America Director David Ensor said that Aatif? ?risked his life on a daily basis to provide his audience with fair and balanced news from this critical region."

"We mourn the loss of our colleague," said Ensor. "We call on authorities in Pakistan to do more to protect journalists working there and bring his killers to justice."

Safdar Hayat Dawar, president of the Tribal Union of Journalists, knew Aatif as a "thoroughly professional" journalist who remained committed to his reporting, despite the threats. Dawar worries for the dozens of journalists who continue to work in the region.

"How are they supposed to work, when they're suspected of spying for the U.S. or for Pakistan's armed forces?" said Dawar. "Twelve journalists have been gunned down in the tribal areas since 2005, and we don't know what will happen next."

NBC News? Amna Nawaz contributed to this report from Islamabad.

This seems interesting, can I reverse Cupid's daughter? Also, if you let us play a character, do we have to stick with their given names? Cupid and Psyche's daughter's name is Voluptas.

Giants at 49ers, Ravens at Patriots

That road warrior mentality the New York Giants have embraced is paving their path nicely.

They will need it for one more game when they head to San Francisco next Sunday to play for the NFC championship.

Since making the playoffs as a wild card in 2007, Tom Coughlin's team has emphasized the need to be comfortable on the road. The Giants felt downright at home at Lambeau Field in the postseason for the second straight time, humbling the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers 37-20 Sunday.

Four years ago, they eliminated the Packers 23-20 in overtime on the Lambeau tundra.

"I think we're a dangerous team," Coughlin said. "I like where we are and how we're playing."

Why not? Eli Manning threw for three touchdowns for the second consecutive week, Hakeem Nicks caught two of his scoring throws ? one a 37-yard desperation pass at the end of the first half ? and the Giants (11-7) forced four turnovers from the usually precise Packers and had four sacks.

So it's on to San Francisco, where they lost 27-20 in November. But the Giants also lost to the Packers (15-2) during the regular season.

The 49ers (14-3) won a classic on Saturday, rallying to beat New Orleans 36-32 with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith to Vernon Davis with 9 seconds remaining.

The AFC title game will match the Baltimore Ravens (13-4) and Patriots (14-3) in New England. Two years ago, Baltimore romped at Foxboro 33-14 in the wild-card round.

Baltimore finished off a 9-0 home record with a 20-13 victory Sunday over first-time playoff qualifier Houston.

Ed Reed's interception late in the fourth quarter sealed it, and the Ravens didn't commit a penalty or have a turnover. Lardarius Webb had two picks and Joe Flacco threw for two TDs.

"We have won in New England," Flacco said. "They are one of the teams, like us, that's tough to beat at home. We know how tough it is to go into a place like that, a place like here, and win a football game. So we're going to have to make sure we prepare well all week and bring our 'A' game up there."

New England routed Denver 45-10, silencing Tebowmania as Tom Brady tied an NFL mark with six touchdown passes and set another with five in the first half.

NFC

In their last meeting, 49ers All-Pro defensive tackle Justin Smith batted down Manning's pass in the closing seconds to preserve a win. That started New York on a downward spiral of four consecutive losses.

But the Giants have found a pass rush and a running game, Manning has maintained his sizzling pace in his best season, and they have gotten healthy. They've won five of six, including two playoff games.

"We went down there earlier this year and we didn't get it done, we fell short," receiver Mario Manningham said. "But I think we're going to go back and watch what we did wrong and just come back and do the right things."

San Francisco has done nearly everything right in a turnaround season under first-year coach Jim Harbaugh. They are extremely efficient with perhaps the best tackling defense in the league led by four All-Pros ? linebackers Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman, cornerback Carlos Rogers and Smith ? and ball-hawking skills that allowed them to lead the NFL with 38 takeaways.

Same thing on offense, with a league-low 10 turnovers.

"It's a lot better than traveling to Wisconsin. More importantly, we're playing a team we've already faced," Rogers said. "It's not as hard as preparing for another team we haven't faced yet."

The difference in pedigree for the quarterbacks is so large, though, that it could swing the edge to the Giants.

"Guys understand the way to win football games against good teams," Manning said. "Our defense is playing great with pressure and turnovers. Our offense for the most part is protecting the ball and playing smart football. When we have a chance to make a big play we are making them."

AFC

There's also a seeming mismatch at quarterback in this game. Brady's sensational season, with the second-most yards passing in NFL history behind only what Drew Brees managed in 2011, was somewhat overshadowed by Brees and Aaron Rodgers ? even by Tebow. But he sure took center stage against overmatched Denver.

"We know we have a big test next week," Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis said. "Tom is playing excellent up there, and what they did to the Broncos ... I think they sent a message to whoever was coming up there. So, we've got our hands full and we've got to go up and get ready to play in the AFC championship."

New England rarely has faced a defense as strong as Baltimore's this season, however. Indeed, the Patriots lost to the best defense it opposed, Pittsburgh's.

If the Ravens can keep the game tight behind Lewis, Reed, Terrell Suggs and the staunch D, they'll hope their QB, Joe Flacco, can come up with enough big plays to get them to their first Super Bowl since January 2001. The Patriots have been vulnerable in pass defense, but their prolific offense has offset most problems.

"I always say there is a right way to do things, there is a wrong way to do things and there is just the Ravens' way of doing things," Suggs said. "It wasn't pretty but we're not really a pretty team. We got the W and now it's on to the AFC championship."

PASADENA, California (AP) ? Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were together again on Saturday ? at least to promote their new project.

The stars, who announced last summer they were ending their marriage after seven years, appeared on a stage Saturday to talk briefly about a new music series they are doing together. "Q'Viva! The Chosen" premieres on Univision on Jan. 28.

Anthony reached down to offer his hand and help Lopez climb three stairs to the stage, and later admired the four sparkling rings on her left hand. They sat side by side on director's chairs.

The two stars, along with Jamie King, travel throughout north and south America to search for artists who will come to the United States and participate in a live show of Latin music and entertainment. It airs in 12 weekly episodes in the U.S. and on Spanish-language stations across Latin America. An English-language version is planned later for Fox.

Anthony and Lopez were working this week to judge some of the contestants, Univision said.

"It was like any time that we work together," said Lopez, who wore a tight blue leather mini-dress for the morning news conference. "We have a great time working together."

Lopez, also a judge on Fox's "American Idol," said she'd be open to doing another season if the first one is successful.

Anthony said that there's been a misconception that "Q'Viva! The Chosen" is just a talent show.

"We're not judges," he said. "We're show producers. We're putting together a live show and we're documenting the process."

Their time on stage was limited. The news conference began 30 minutes late, and a reporter shouted down a talkative emcee to demand that journalists be allowed to ask questions.

Only two were allowed before Univision began a musical performance. Afterward, the stars were hustled offstage as Adele's hit about a breakup, "Rolling in the Deep," was played over the public address system.

American Astronomical Society Conference Highlights Battle for Dark Skies (ContributorNetwork)

AUSTIN, Texas -- Imagine that you couldn't see more than a few stars in your sky. Or never knew what the Milky Way looked like. Would you know what you're missing? And would you even care?

You might think that astronomers are the only ones who care about seeing the stars. Or that only people who are blind or have limited vision don't know what a dark starry night looks like. But, it's a problem we all face.

"The vanishing night skies don't just affect astronomers who study the planets, stars, and galaxies," said Dr. Connie Walker of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) and an advocate of dark skies. "We're all losing our skies to light pollution. In many places, we are raising a generation of people who don't know what the Milky Way looks like. And, light pollution affects the health of many forms of life on Earth -- including humans."

Dr. Walker's remarks opened a session on light pollution at this week's American Astronomical Society conference held in Austin. More than 2,500 astronomers from around the world are here, ranging from undergraduate students to Nobel Laureates. The topics they're discussing range from studies of the sun, moon and planets to explorations of the most distant objects in the universe.

And, they're talking about threats to their work from light pollution.

For many at this meeting -- especially astronomers who observe the universe in what's called "visible" (or "optical") and near-infrared wavelengths of light -- the glare from nearby lights is drowning out the view of objects they want to study. Researchers who use Kitt Peak National Observatory, part of NOAO, deal with the lights of Tucson, Ariz., (60 miles away) and Phoenix (about 200 miles away). Even for some of the newest and most remote observatories in Chile and Hawaii, light glare is a growing issue.

However, the battle for dark skies isn't just astronomy's problem. It's yours, too. Have you ever been blinded by bright lights when driving at night? Or stared at your TV or computer monitor late into the evening? Do you live in a light-bright city where it never gets completely dark at night? If so, then your health can be affected by too much light.

Why is this? Take the TV and computer monitor issue. They emit light that is rich in blue wavelengths. As attendees at the dark skies symposium found out, very recent health studies show that excessive exposure these blue-rich light sources at night hampers or even shuts down your body's production of melatonin -- a substance that helps you sleep and also plays a role in fighting off diseases such as cancer. Researchers are now looking at the links between people who work at night (presumably under bright lights) and higher rates of breast and prostate cancer.

In nature, light glare cuts across the landscape, banishing the darkness. It has devastating effects on wildlife and plants. Recently in Utah, thousands of birds apparently mistook a brightly lit football field for a lake, and came crashing down to their deaths. Newly hatched turtles get confused by lights on their way to the sea in Florida, and they die beneath the wheels of cars, or stranded in yards and parking lots.

Participants in the dark skies workshop discussed three major weapons in the battle against light pollution:

1) proper use of outdoor lighting

2) energy-efficient lighting and

3) limiting your exposure to light at night.

With these, people around the world are figuring out ways to use lights more efficiently to maintain safety, security, and dark skies. The effort is led in large part by the International Dark-Sky Association, a group dedicated to eradicating light pollution and advocating for wiser use of lights.

Other efforts pull together community leaders, families, and students to figure out how much light pollution affects their communities. Beginning on Jan. 14, and extending through April, people are banding together in an event called Globe At Night, to measure the brightness of their local skies and share that information. They recognize that dark skies and dark nights are part of the common heritage of all life on Earth and that the battle to save the night is an important one.

(AP) ? Out of a relatively balmy winter have sprung some economic surprises. People have more cash in their pockets because they aren't turning up the thermostat. Airlines don't have to de-ice planes or battle blizzards. And shoppers are finding great deals on coats and boots.

But there are also disappointments. Merchants are stuck with unsold shovels and snow blowers. Drugstores say customers aren't buying cold medicine or getting as many flu shots.

The weather has been so mild that at some hardware outlets, rakes are flying off the shelf, and grass seed is outselling ice-melting salt.

"I haven't seen this mix of sales since I can remember," said David Ziegler, whose family owns nine Ace Hardware stores in the northwest Chicago area. "They're buying rakes ... just because it's warmer and people are not holed up."

This winter has been remarkably tame, especially in regions accustomed to a three-month tussle with freezing temperatures, snow, sleet and ice. In the Northeast, only four Decembers in the last 117 years have been warmer, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather feels especially gentle after two straight seasons of bitter cold and heavy snow. And it will take much more than Friday's relatively moderate snowstorm in the Midwest and Northeast to change that.

For Rocco A. Guadagna, it's been a lazy winter. He owns a lawn care and snow-removal company in Buffalo, N.Y. Because he charges an upfront fee for an entire season of plowing, he's getting paid even though he's hardly had to do any work.

Last year, his plows went out 42 times, more than usual. This year, he went out Friday for just the second time. But he doesn't think customers mind paying for something they barely use.

"Ninety percent, when they pay me, they say 'I hope I never see you,'" he said.

He's not the only one saving money. The weather and low natural gas prices have combined to push down home heating costs for the 51 percent of American households that use gas.

A typical bill this winter will be $700, a 3 percent drop from last year and the fourth straight year of declines, according to Mark Wolfe, executive director of the National Energy Assistance Director's Association.

Jim Cusick, a state employee in St. Paul, has been able to run his radiators less and catch up on an out-of-control home heating bill aggravated by the big, drafty old house where he lives with five of his six kids.

Because of last winter, Cusick said, he owed his utility more than $3,000 in back payments. As of this month, he said, his negative balance is down to $650.

"It's a bummer for the kids. They miss the skating and stuff," Cusick said. "But if winter stays mild, life will be better."

Airlines are enjoying savings, too. During storms, they often lose money because of refunds, delays and added costs for labor and expensive de-icing fluid.

United Continental Holdings Inc., the world's largest airline, said December snowstorms in 2010 hurt its fourth-quarter profit by $10 million and wiped out $25 million in revenue from fares and fees.

Not this season though. There were about 7,000 flight cancelations in the U.S. in December, down from 29,000 the year before, according to FlightStats. On-time performance improved to 79 percent, from 66 percent the year before.

The weather is a mixed bag for stores that offer outdoor gear. Henry Carter, co-owner of 9th Street Cycles, a bike store in Brooklyn, N.Y., said sales of winter equipment have been slow, but bike sales have been surprisingly brisk. And customers are riding more. So instead of the occasional cleaning or adjustment, the repair shop is busy will full tuneups.

"That's usually the stuff of summertime," he said.

For retailers, the weather has been a challenge and an opportunity. They want the weather to be cold, but not too cold. They hope for a few snowstorms that inspire people to buy coats and snow blowers, but not blizzards that keep shoppers inside for days.

So, while more people are out shopping now, they're not buying the bulky winter merchandise. And since they can't sell it, stores have to discount it heavily, which eats away at profit.

Now, instead of clearing out what's left of the cold-weather stuff to make room for spring supplies, they have mounds of winter things for sale at rock-bottom prices.

Coats are the biggest headache. They take up a lot of space, and they are expensive, so big markdowns hurt the bottom line more. Stores are discounting coats by 70 percent on average, and many are slashing prices on entire coat departments.

"Stores can't get rid of the outerwear fast enough," said Scott A. Bernhardt, chief operating officer of Planalytics Inc., a research firm that uses weather patterns to advise stores what they should buy to sell to customers.

Barbara Paschal of Muncie, Ind., recently got a coat at Sears for $48, marked down from $120. Still, she's holding off on buying gloves for three of her four teenage sons.

"There's no reason to buy gloves," said Paschal, noting the temperature is around 40 degrees. "If we get snow, then I will get the gloves."

Drugstore operators Walgreen Co. and Rite Aid Corp. both say the warm weather has hurt sales of cough, cold and flu products compared with last year. They are also giving fewer flu shots and filling fewer prescriptions.

Walgreen administered about 5.3 million flu shots between August and December, down from 6 million over the same period in 2010. In December, prescriptions for cough, cold and flu treatments were down 1.5 percent at established stores.

The temperatures have even stifled good-natured winter humor.

Ellen Shubart, who volunteers for the Chicago Architecture Foundation, recently started guiding a tour of the city's underground walkway system downtown called "Warm Walk, Cool Architecture."

The jokes she devised about gloves, boots and hats have been falling flat.

"We planned it with the idea that it's going to be cold outside," she said.
