Boeing 777 crashes while landing at San Francisco airport

The fiery crash landing of a Korean jetliner at the San Francisco International Airport late Saturday morning has left at least two people dead, and up to 70 injured, according to NBC Bay Area station KNTV. Hospitals say some of the injured are critical. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Erin McClam and Daniel Arkin, NBC News

A Boeing 777 jetliner with 307 people on board crashed and caught fire at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday after a flight across the Pacific Ocean from South Korea. Two people were killed and scores injured, authorities said.

The plane, Asiana Airlines Flight 214 from Seoul, apparently hit the lip of the seawall that separates the runway from San Francisco Bay, sources told NBC News, then slammed into the ground and skidded down the runway before coming to rest in an adjacent field, its tail sheared off and the fuselage spewing black smoke. Photos and video from the scene showed passengers sliding down the emergency chutes and walking away.

Despite the deaths and scores of injuries -- many of them serious -- San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee said at a evening news conference that "This could have been much worse."

Federal investigators said it was too early to determine a cause.?A representative of the National Transportation Safety Board arrived on scene late Saturday and took control of the investigation.

The sources who spoke with NBC News said the pilot did not make a distress call before landing. The plane crashed in favorable weather ? partly cloudy skies and light wind.

Joanne Hayes-White, the San Francisco fire chief, said there were 307 people on board ? 291 passengers and 16 crew -- and all had been accounted for. Authorities said 182 people were taken to one of nine Bay Area hospitals, including 49 with serious injuries. Hospitals reported that the injuries included burns and fractures.

San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee thanks the first responders of the Asiana Airlines crash and says "this could have been much worse."

She said first-responders who arrived at the jet saw a handful of survivors emerging from the bay.

?We did observe some of the passengers coming out of the water. But the plane certainly was not in the water. There was a fire on the plane, so the assumption might be that they went near the water?s edge which is very shallow to maybe douse themselves with water.?

The bodies of the two people who were killed were found on the runway, according to Hayes-White.

South Korea's transport ministry said the two who died were Chinese citizens.

Benjamin Levy, who was on the plane, described hearing a lot of screaming after the landing. He told NBC Bay Area that he also saw many head injuries, but that most of the passengers appeared to make it off the plane safely. Fire crews sprayed water and retardant foam to douse the flames.

?We were approaching perfectly well, but we were too low,? he said. ?When the pilot realized it, he put some more gas to correct it, but it was too late, so we hit the runway pretty bad, and we started going up in the air again, and we landed pretty hard.?

A Boeing 777 operated by Asiana Airlines crash landed at San Francisco International Airport.

Stefanie Turner, a witness, told MSNBC that she saw the plane clip the runway with its tail, then come to rest with flames and smoke billowing from the fuselage.

?The tail was too low. Instead of coming in flat it was coming in at, I would say, maybe a 45-degree angle, with the tail far too low,? she said. ?It really went through quite a few acrobatics on the runway.?

Besides the 61 Americans, the airline said the jet carried 77 Koreans, 141 Chinese, three passengers from India, one each from Japan and Vietnam and seven whose nationalities were unknown.?

The crash ? the first involving a jumbo jet in the United States in more than a decade ? happened at 11:27 a.m. local time. It left a field of debris down the runway, beginning at the seawall that divides the runway from San Francisco Bay. Pieces of the tail could be seen among the wreckage.

An air traffic control recording captured a controller saying: ?Emergency vehicles are responding. We have everyone on the way.?

David Eun, an executive with Samsung Electronics who was on the flight, posted to his Twitter account: ?I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I?m ok.? He also posted a photo that showed people walking or running away from the downed plane, including at least a half-dozen who appeared to have slid down an emergency chute.

Eun previously worked at Google and AOL. Sheryl Sandberg, a friend of his and the chief operating officer of Facebook, said that she was supposed to be on Asiana 214 with family and colleagues but that they switched to a different airline to use frequent-flier miles.

The airline said on Twitter that it was investigating and would have news as soon as possible. It offered thoughts and prayers for the passengers and crew.

The deaths are the first in an accident involving a 777, a wide-body, twin-engine jet that has been in service since 1995 and is known as the Triple-7. Before Saturday, the most serious 777 accident was in January 2008, when a British Airways flight landed short and skidded onto the runway, injuring 47 people. The jet in Saturday?s crash had been in service since 2006.

San Francisco International suspended all takeoffs and landings for four hours after the crash and said that some flights were being diverted. Two of its four runways later reopened. The airport advised passengers to check with their airlines.

President Barack Obama, at the Camp David retreat in Maryland, was made aware of the crash and was in touch with federal, state and local authorities, a White House official said.

The last crash of a jumbo jet in the United States was in November 2001, when American Airlines Flight 587, an Airbus A300-600 airliner,?crashed in a New York neighborhood. The last fatal crash of any commercial plane in the U.S. was in February 2009, when a Continental Airlines regional flight crashed into a house near Buffalo, N.Y., killing 49 people.

The flight tracking service FlightAware said that Asiana 214 flew about 10 and a half hours after taking off from Incheon airport at 5:04 p.m. local time, about half an hour late. The flight had originated in Shanghai, China.

The service identified the model as a Boeing 777-200, which has a wingspan of almost 200 feet and can carry as many as 440 people. The manufacturing company Pratt & Whitney said the plane was powered by its PW4000 engines.

Federal sources told NBC News that there was no indication of terrorism. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a full team to San Francisco. Boeing said it was gathering information.

?Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today?s incident at SFO,? Boeing said on its Twitter account. ?We stand ready to assist the NTSB.?

Trains, planes and automobiles: Mexico rail freight comes of age

By Gabriel Stargardter

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Slowly, like the trains that crawl past towering avenues of containers here at the country's largest rail hub, Mexico's freight business has transformed into a principal artery for the top export industries of Latin America's second-largest economy.

A rail network that once shunted Mexico's mustachioed revolutionaries to battles across the country was gasping for air by the late 1990s as grinding inefficiency and rising costs forced the government into privatization.

But gradually, thanks to private investment, the North American Free Trade Agreement, a bulging wage differential with China and booming auto and manufacturing sectors, Mexico's freight sector has morphed into a top logistical thoroughfare, shuttling cars, fridge-freezers and grains across the border.

A planned government reform that seeks to allow foreign investment in the state-controlled oil sector, coupled with a federal commitment to spend over $20 billion on infrastructure this year alone, has helped raise expectations for the industry.

Mexican trains now haul about 14 percent of the nearly $500 billion worth of goods that cross the Mexico-U.S. border each year, up from 10 percent in 2009.

And with some saying total bilateral trade could double in the next five years, having already jumped 62 percent between 2009 and 2012, it's a trend that looks set to continue.

"We're very conscious of the boom that's coming," said Isaac Franklin, chief financial officer at Ferromex, a joint subsidiary of Mexican miner Grupo Mexico and U.S. railroad Union Pacific, and one of Mexico's three railway concession-holders.

Grupo Mexico will invest a record $536 million in its rail business this year, a 10 percent increase on the usual spending level, on infrastructure, maintenance and equipment.

Seven years ago, the Ferrovalle terminus, a 1,000-hectare (2,472-acre) expanse in the heart of Mexico City, where yellow-flowered cacti sprout from the tracks, handled 150,000 containers a year.

This year, Ferrovalle's director, Erich Wetzel, said he expected 400,000 containers. A recently launched app lets customers keep tabs on the exact location of their goods.

"Our growth is limited by the size of the area," Wetzel said. "We calculate that by 2017, we'll be near capacity here."

Rewind 16 years to when Mexico privatized its railways and it shipped less than 20 percent of its total cargo by rail.

Today, Mexico's network, which is fully integrated with the North American system, allowing customers to move products seamlessly from Monterrey to Montreal, has a 26 percent market share.

Within a decade, experts say, if the government's proposed reforms take effect and Mexico's small but fast-growing aerospace and high-tech engineering sectors gain momentum, market share could rise to 35 percent, just below U.S. levels.

TRAIN DUOPOLY

Controlled both by Kansas City Southern de Mexico and Grupo Mexico via its Ferromex and Ferrosur subsidiaries, Mexico's freight sector is piggybacking the growth of leading export industries such as cars and electronics.

Infrastructure y Transportes Mexico (ITM), which groups Ferromex and Ferrosur and makes up nearly a fifth of Grupo Mexico's total revenues, has 55 percent of the Mexican market, with Kansas City Southern de Mexico controlling the rest.

That has fueled rumors of an upcoming IPO for ITM, and a possible takeover of Kansas City Southern, which derives just under half its revenues from its Mexican operation.

"It's hard to give you a date," said Ferromex's Chief Executive Rogelio Velez, when asked if the spin-off could happen this year. "We're analyzing it and if the conditions are right, it could be in that time frame."

Kansas City's blossoming cross-border business has positioned it better than most U.S. railroads, whose heavy dependence on coal shipments has hurt them since early 2012 as demand for coal slumped, making it a prime takeover target.

"There are always rumors," said KCS de Mexico President Jose Zozaya. "We're just focused on ourselves."

While such a move may well make sense, said former World Bank railways adviser Lou Thompson, U.S. antitrust regulators could be an obstacle to any railroad bid.

"There's always a big fish that wants to swallow the smaller fish if they can," he said, pointing to Warren Buffet's $44 billion purchase of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the United States' second-largest railroad, in 2009.

Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim sold Ferrosur to Grupo Mexico in 2011 and retains a 25 percent stake in ITM.

CARS DRIVE TRAIN BOOM

One thing that links both companies is their growing reliance on Mexico's surging auto sector.

With myriad free trade agreements, a cheap labor force and proximity to the lucrative U.S. market, car makers have rushed to open factories in Mexico, the world's No. 8 producer.

Auto, including parts, which made up just 4 percent of KCS De Mexico's cargo in 2011, rose to 16 percent last year. Ferromex's car business has doubled in the last five years, Velez said.

Both companies are now investing record amounts to serve the car industry, tailoring spending to attract business from three new assembly plants belonging to Nissan, Mazda and Honda, which are due to come online late this year, or early 2014.

Mexico's budding aerospace industry, which is located near the country's major car plants and growing quickly, provides an attractive new market for railroads to lure away from trucking.

Just over 60 percent of goods are trucked north across the U.S. border, down from around 70 percent in 2009.

While trucks offer more flexibility, one three-km (1.9-mile) train can take up to 300 trucks off the road, said Wetzel, making it a cheaper and greener option for the right product.

Tony Hatch, a transport consultant with ABH Consulting, said train costs can, in some instances, be 20 to 50 percent lower. Still, trains cannot deliver door to door, so trucks must be involved at some stage, eating into rail's cost advantage.

Trucks take an average of 133 minutes to cross the border, according to data compiled by the U.S.-based Wilson Center. Trains take less than an hour, said Zozaya.

"Border security folks like trains," said Christopher Wilson, an associate at the Wilson Center's Mexico Institute, and one of the authors of the Center's State of the Border Report. "They do some deeper level of inspection because they have an X-ray machine sitting by the side of the track."

SECURITY TRAINING

According to FreightWatch, a logistics security firm, Mexico has among the highest incidence of cargo theft in the world. Beset by organized crime, Mexico has been scarred by a drug war that has killed 70,000 people since 2006.

And although trains are generally less affected by security issues than trucks, they don't come out unscathed.

Ferromex spends 33 million pesos ($2.5 million) a month on staving off thefts and attacks, Velez said.

Wetzel said the Ministry of Communications and Transport, which regulates the industry, has begun looking into the possibility of creating a dedicated rail police force.

Part of the problem, which both companies have raised with the government, stems from the fact that trains must travel at 12 mph in urban areas.

In another headache, the southbound part of the business, which mainly involves hauling U.S. grains to Mexico and makes up about 30 percent of Ferromex's business, is sensitive to factors like last year's devastating U.S. drought.

Beyond Mexico's inhospitable terrain, one additional factor limits the growth of the sector. Only the government can mandate the opening of new routes, and as concession-holders, neither company can build new lines.

But looking out across Ferrovalle's sprawling installations while locomotives clunked past the endless stacks of pastel containers, Wetzel sounded confident.

"Railways are cash cows," he said. "If you don't pay me, I don't deliver."

How To Be Sure Your Site Visitors Trust Your Internet Marketing ...

If you have a knack for finding a niche, you might be a great affiliate marketer. With thousands of companies and millions of products to choose from, you can be an affiliate for any type of business you choose. However, you will first need to know more about affiliate marketing. We will cover some vital information in this article.

Make it a point to avoid engaging in dishonest practices that compromise your site visitors? privacy. This will just make your customers mad. However, the worst case scenario is that vital affiliate customer strings are broken, and nasty viruses are spread.

Make sure that your affiliates don?t abuse cookies, and certainly don?t do it yourself. At the best, this is going to be irritating to your potential customers. At worst, this could spread viruses, or break customer tracking chains.

TIP! You need to find out exactly how all orders are tracked before signing with any marketing programs. If you get people to make orders by mail or phone and your affiliate ID isn?t attached to them, you could lose a lot of commission.

It?s a good idea to research how a business keeps track of orders not created through their web site when you?re looking through online marketing programs. If email or phone orders are not linked back to your ID as an affiliate, you could lose substantial amounts of commission.

To make the most out of web marketing, keep only the programs that are making you the most money. Check up on your affiliates and their projects often. You can make room for advertisers that give you more money when you get rid of the affiliates that are the lowest-performing.

Let your visitors know who your affiliates are so that your readers can feel more positive about your intentions. Honesty is always the best policy if you are using affiliate marketing. When users know that you are doing this they will see you in a better light.

TIP! Think about adding secret links to your content. There are ways out there to put unobtrusive links to affiliates in your content without making the links obvious.

A lot of affiliate communication happens through emails, but the inbox makes an inefficient place to store important information. Avoid this by creating a document that lists the important points in the email. This will save you time and increase your work speed. With this solution, you don?t have to keep going into your email to check things.

Your status as an affiliate might suffer if you jump into the markets of the most sought after products. Marketing quality products is important. Keep in mind that when something is extremely popular it doesn?t mean it is automatically considered a quality item. There is fierce competition for really popular items. It is entirely possible that you will not make any kind of income.

If you choose to work with an affiliate company, make sure the company conducts business honestly and is willing to share profits. Stay away from affiliate companies that offer less than 20% of the total profits from the products that you sell. Fair affiliate companies want you to be motivated to drive business and understand they need to pay for those efforts.

TIP! Create links to a few carefully selected products only. Once you?ve chosen some links, experiment with organizing them in different ways on your site.

Many affiliate marketers try too hard to be ?super? affiliates. The problem is, they are just to big to succeed. There is no ceiling to your success. Take a reasoned, methodical approach that fits your personality.

Take a closer look at secret links, and utilize them if necessary. The listed techniques can help you have links to affiliates without being too obvious. Make use of these techniques, but always be honest and upfront about it. Inform your visitors where these links lead to so that your visitors will not be caught off-guard.

Affiliate programs can be quite diverse. All programs will have different products and varied amounts of flexibility.

TIP! While affiliate marketing can offer the prospect of a lot of money, you must do your research so that you understand how it works. Try to get your website as high in search engine rankings as you possibly can.

Carefully review the products you want to sell before you place any links on your page. The arrangement of affiliate link online is important for increasing earnings. Take time to figure out how to do this.

Do everything you can to make your readers trust you. Readers who like the content you provide will research your company, and they are more likely customer candidates.

Attaching a deadline to the purchase of an affiliate product can be a very effective tactic to employ. If your customers see there?s a small window of time for them to purchase your product, it may give them a push to purchase it. This is an excellent method to raise your sales.

TIP! One way you can increase clicks on banner advertisements is to have a trivia question that links back to your site on the banner. Curiosity will get the best of many people, and they will click the banner to get the answer to the quiz question.

These statistics are a very important tool. This will let you see the number of visitors that have drifted through your website as well as the number of customers that have purchased items.

Make sure that you are honest with those who read your websites about your affiliations. They will be happy that you were honest, and become more loyal as a result.

Lifetime affiliate commissions are much less common than they used to be. They?re one of the best kinds, though, so make sure to jump at them if you get the chance. Affiliate networks introduce product providers to potential vendors, increasing income for both parties without increasing work. Most affiliate companies will only pay the affiliate seller a commission if a consumer purchases within a certain amount of time. These arrangements are rare but are certainly worth looking for.

TIP! You should be confident in the products you choose to promote. The products you promote are a reflection of your website and yourself.

Make sure you attract a good audience for the products you sell with affiliate partners. If you have an inexpensive product, you can get by with a high-volume approach with low click-through. Becoming more in-depth with high-end merchandise can entice visitors to become customers.

Lifetime commissions are a rare commodity in affiliate marketing these days. Nonetheless, the potential for earning is still tremendous, and it?s worthwhile to explore. The typical affiliate contract specifies that the affiliate will receive a certain amount of money for every sale referred through his affiliate link. The commission is usually paid only if the consumer purchases within a specific time period. These commissions are worth hunting down if you think you can get your hands on one.

If you want to be successful at affiliate marketing it is absolutely crucial that you stay relevant. Make sure you are always up to date on all that your affiliate programs have to offer. New techniques are being created to improve usability and increase the appeal of advertisements.

TIP! Everyone likes prizes and contests, offer them to help your affiliate marketing efforts. Visitors who are interested in your contest will return to the site regularly and may also tell others to visit the website as well.

Even a good product won?t sell itself. You can hopefully see now that marketing is a complex process that deserves as much attention as the other parts of your business. This advice will be of service to you as you implement your own internet marketing strategy. Don?t take your business lightly; to be prosperous you must research and use as many tips as you can.

I will tell you 3 facts anyone may perform that will certainly get men and women to fall in love with paying merchandise produced by you. This is the real experience of precisely how 2 ex-homeless men assisted over 27,530 regular individuals delete their own ?Inner Wussy? and make more than $6.1 million in profits online over the last five several months.

W.Va. suspect in shooting of 2 deputies killed

(AP) ? An 84-year-old West Virginia man who shot and injured two deputies was killed by police Saturday after he emerged from his barricaded house with a weapon, police said.

The death of John Evans outside his central West Virginia home escalated after a 911 call from a neighbor who told police Evans threatened him with a firearm over an unspecified dispute, Sgt. Michael Baylous said.

When a Nicholas County deputy arrived at Evans' house, Evans shot him with a shotgun, Baylous said. The second deputy was shot when he responded to the scene.

Both deputies were airlifted to Charleston for treatment of wounds that are not considered life threatening, Baylous said.

State police units and other law enforcement agencies then responded to Evans' house, sparking sporadic exchanges of gunfire over several hours.

"He just went through the house shooting at law enforcement," Baylous said.

Throughout the standoff, Baylous said, police appealed to Evans to surrender and used tear gas to flush him from the house. "No lines of communication could be established," he said.

Evans ultimately emerged from a back door of the house with a weapon and was killed, Baylous said.

Sony Xperia smartphones getting my Xperia remote security service

Sony is rolling out its remote security service "my Xperia," worldwide after piloting it in the Nordic countries in January.

Sony has informed that the service will be extended to users of Sony Xperia smartphones in the coming weeks. The service is essentially delivered in the form of a remote security app that will enable users to locate and protect their Xperia smartphone and their personal data stored on the device, if it gets misplaced. Users will be able to download the service through Sony's Update Center app.

Once activated through the phone's settings via the 'Xperia' settings option, users will be able to sign in with their Google credentials to the my Xperia website(myxperia.sonymobile.com) and get remote access to their phone. Users will be able to sound an alert overriding the silent mode and wake the display, through the web interface of the service. They'll also be able to map the location of their phone through the service, remotely lock the phone to keep their data private and wipe the phone erasing data from both internal and external storage, if required.

Sony currently offers almost the same functionality through the McAfee Security app with limited functions and limited period validity, in some regions.

While third party services offered by companies like Norton, Quickheal and Kaspersky, among others also offer mobile security services, they charge users a one time or recurring fee. With Sony rolling out its own security services, users will be able to benefit from these free of charge. In fact, remote security services are increasingly becoming standard with Apple offering its Find My iPhone, BlackBerry phones coming with BlackBerry Protect and Samsung and HTC phones coming with their own suite of security services, out of the box.
