Apple TV gets HBO Go and sports with WatchESPN
Some good news for premium cable and sports fans today: Apple on Wednesday said it has signed deals to bring HBO Go and WatchESPN to its Apple TV set-top box.
HBO Go is only available to HBO subscribers, so this isn?t a solution for cord-cutters. However, it?s good for those who want to access to the cable channel?s backlog of content: customers can watch any of HBO?s shows at any time?via the HBO Go channel on Apple TV. HBO Go has already been available for Apple?s mobile devices and on competing platforms Roku and Xbox 360.
WatchESPN is also a subscriber-only channel. Those who are signed up via their local cable provider can watch programming on Apple TV from across the company?s channels: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, curated clips from ESPN.com and others.
Three other channels are also coming. The U.K.?s SkyNews will be viewable on demand or live in the U.S., U.K. and Ireland. Programming from Japan?s Crunchyroll, an anime and news channel, will be available worldwide one hour after airing. Music channel Qello has free and paid subscriptions available.
None of this makes Apple TV a viable cable replacement for fans of premium content and live sports, because Apple TV still requires that pesky cable subscription. However, Apple is slowly but surely broadening its living room play to compete with Xbox, Roku and others. Apple?s longterm TV strategy is still very much TBD, but this is a good move toward getting Apple customers used to the idea of watching their favorite content via the Apple TV and not live via a cable TV subscription.
With the announcement of new content, Apple also gave the latest stats on iTunes downloads: 1 billion TV episodes and 380 million movies have been purchased in total. Meanwhile, 800,000 TV episodes and over 350,000 movies are bought each day.

China and Mexico: The Real Winner May Be Hong Kong
Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Mexico in early June and met with the Mexican President Enrique Pe?a Nieto. Following their meetings, the two leaders released a statement saying that both were prepared to ?take their relationship to a new level? and to develop the existing trade relationship into a ?strategic partnership.?

This suggests that both countries could form mutually beneficial commercial alliances in the form of joint ventures. For China and Hong Kong, that makes some sense because Mexico is a member of the North American Free Trade Agreement ? which also includes the United States and Canada. Therefore, the prospect of Chinese companies seeking partnerships with Mexican businesses to then sell onto the lucrative U.S. market looms large.

But does it? If there was substance to these declarations of ?strategic partnership? then we would potentially be in the wonderfully ironic position of Chinese companies, through Mexican JVs, qualifying for the U.S.-led Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, a trade bloc that includes Mexico and Vietnam, among others, and is largely aimed at replacing China as the primary supplier of choice for certain products (such as textiles) for the U.S. market.
?
Yet, sadly, I feel that is not going to happen. These sorts of meetings, in my opinion, are an excuse for political grandstanding and media exposure. As a result, they mean very little.
?
Hong Kong the Winner?
While the prospect of Mexican-Chinese JVs to target the U.S. market may seem appealing to both, in actual fact, the Chinese side have little incentive to do so. Mexico has no double taxation agreement (DTA) with China, meaning that Chinese investors are subject to Mexican rates of corporate income tax (CIT) and related taxes with no treaty to offset these.
?
Mexico has a higher rate of CIT at 28% than China at 25%. Although that doesn?t sound like a huge difference ? it is more than enough to eat into any available profit gains in such competitive markets. Mexico also levies immediate worldwide income tax claims on all residents ? something that is not likely to sit well with Chinese investors.
?
That said about Mainland China, the news may yet be of use to Hong Kong?s business community. Hong Kong signed a comprehensive DTA with Mexico on June 18, 2012, which entered into force on March 7, 2013 and will have effect in Hong Kong for years of assessment beginning on or after April 1, 2014.
?
Under the terms of the DTA, the current policy of double-taxing Mexican individuals who are resident in Hong Kong will end, and any tax paid in Mexico will be considered a tax credit against the tax payable to Hong Kong. The DTA also incorporates the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development requirements for the exchange of tax information.
?
Specifically, the DTA lowers rates of withholding taxes in the contracting state in which the income is derived, in respect of dividends, interest and royalties. While dividend income is only taxable in the country of the recipient, interest income can be taxed in both territories.
?
But in the territory where the interest income arises, withholding tax will be capped at 4.9% if the beneficial owner is a bank, and at 10% when the recipient is the beneficial owner of the asset from which interest income is derived. If the recipient is the beneficial owner of royalties income, the withholding tax rate will be capped at 10%.?
?
Action, not just words
The two leaders released a statement suggesting that Chinese-Mexican bilateral relations would enter into a new phase and were ?being upgraded.? Xinhua published the official statement through China Daily that, in condensed form, promised both sides ?will view their relations from a strategic and long-term perspective? and ?accommodate each other?s concerns.?
?
Along with that are statements to ?maintain exchanges between high-level leaders and political parties,? as well as ?agree to increase mutual investment in key areas such as energy, mining, infrastructure and high technology.?

Following a heart-palpitating victory late Tuesday in overtime, the Miami Heat now moves on to another ?Do or Die? situation for Game 7 on Thursday.
?
If it?s any repeat of Tuesday?s heart-thumping game, Game 7 promises fans more of the same nervousness and exuberance they?ve become familiar throughout this championship series.
"I can't even talk right now," said Ilona Kobry as she high fived all her friends in a frenzy scene in downtown Hollywood. "I'm speechless."
"One of the most tremendous Heat games of all time." Chad Volkert, 41, Miami Beach, said at the AmericanAirlines Arena after the game.?
The Heat earned another chance for the title, beating the tenacious San Antonio Spurs by tying in at the last few seconds and then winning in overtime in a game that left fans reaching for defibrillators.
Now all they have to do is do it again on Thursday.

Getting a chance for another crack came with much drama on Tuesday both on and off the court.
?
From the stands at the arena, to bars and living rooms in Broward and Palm Beach, Heat fans tuned into the game Tuesday with some hope despite a deflating loss on Sunday.
?
At Hollywood?s packed Whiskey Tango, fans spilled into the sidewalk before the game even started.
Adina Estronza, 24 of Davie, said she felt confident.
?
"We usually bounce back from a loss," said Estronza.
?
Alex Vazquez, 27, of Hollywood, always whips out his #33 Alonzo Mourning on big games and as a good luck charm.
?
"I wear this when they need soul power, " he said.
?
But by halftime, the excitement that surrounded the start of the game had been deflated with the Heat showing signs of struggling.

Marion Walker, 43, of Fort Lauderdale expressed his doubts.
?
?The clock is ticking, LeBron needs to drive the ball in,? he said. ?It?s going to be a sad stadium if the Heat lose tonight.?
The Heat began its comeback during the fourth quarter, sparking fans into a furor.
?
?Lizette Tedoro, 34 of Pinecrest, was nervous.
?
"I'm freaking out, but I have faith," she said from the arena.
?
Her faith paid off during the final few when the Heat tied and sent the game to overtime.
?
??They?ve got the magic!? yelled Delray Beach resident Mike Caruso, attending with son Danny, as the Heat clawed back to within two points with about six minutes to go. ?It?s happening! It?s happening! It?s happening! The Heat are on fire, baby!?
?By the final buzzer, fans celebrated in the streets.
"We weren't so strong at first but we came back," said Asia Murray, 25, of Miami Beach.
?
Murray and her friend Britney Mascoe danced and cheered outside the crowded streets of Hollywod Boulevard in downtown. They vowed a victory come Game 7.
"We're going to murder that too, we're going to take home the championship," said Mascoe, 21, of Miami Beach.
Other Heat fans said they didn't know if they can handle another emotional game like Tuesday's.
"This game was very nerve-wracking," said Brian Botello,26, of Hollywood. "I'm a little nervous now. Game 7 is going to be bananas."
The Heat and the Spurs will duel for a final time starting at 8 p.m. Thursday.
